Materials Technology and Innovation

The department “Materials Technology and Innovation” develops, produces, and characterizes materials for multifunctional medical implants. These metallic materials are based on a complex combination of alloy development, innovative manufacturing processes, and an optimised geometry for the application. To manufacture these multifunctional implants, the department relies on both classic wrought- and modern powder-based additive processes. This allows the material development in a targeted manner and a wide range of geometric structures and properties to be realized, to produce implants for customized applications. The experimental work is supported by various digital tools, modelling, and computer simulations. The focus of our research is on degradable magnesium implants, but our expertise also extends to powder-based titanium alloys for medical and technical applications. The goal is to transfer the scientific results to clinical practice and industry.
